Supporting our friends Status Code 14 in their epic adventures

30 Nov 2022

The team joined us at BoatLife 2022 to display the boat they will row the Atlantic on and raise awareness of their charities, many exhibitors have shown great support including SeaDek and Murlac Marine.

Status Code 14; a group of friends with a passion for adventure who are completing some epic challenges to raise money for The Chestnut Appeal for Men’s Health and Rock2Recovery. Starting with Steve setting out from Inverness Castle to the finish stone in Fort William in June 2022. Followed by a tri-relay from London to Paris Sept 2022 and now the team will then be sailing across the Atlantic in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge in early December 2022. Next up will be an ultra-marathon across the Namibian desert in 2023, and finishing off with a hike up Mont Blanc before paragliding off the summit in 2024. We don’t think they could pack any more adventure into the next 18 months!

All this thrill-seeking is for a fantastic cause, ‘Status Code 14’ is a UK National Emergency Services radio request call used when the sender requires urgent callback and the staff who take these emergency calls are routinely exposed to distressing and traumatic incidents, alongside other demanding workload pressures. Funds raised from the challenges they’re undertaking will go supporting the incredible individuals who may not be able to access the support they need.

Team Statuscode14 wanted to enable those who ‘press the button’ to get the help they need both with stress in the short and long term. Funds raised from their challenges will go to their first chosen charity who support the cause, and direct to individuals who may not be able to access the support they need through what’s offered by the emergency services.

The second charity they support is The Chestnut Appeal. When it comes to men’s cancer, most men don’t know what’s normal and what’s abnormal – and are afraid to ask. This has got to change. Prostate, penile and testicular cancer can be checked and successfully treated – but checking needs to become a habit and talking about it and educating men is paramount. Team Statuscode14 want to raise awareness of men’s cancer and that a regular check could potentially save a life.

In just a few days this incredible team will be taking part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge is the premier event in ocean rowing – A challenge that will take Simon, Steve and Matt more than 3000 Miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain (28oN 18oW) to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda (17oN 61oW).

The annual race begins in early December, with up to 30 teams participating from around the world. The race structure brings together an environment where teams from across the globe gather in the race village San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands. The atmosphere is electric as people help each other prepare for the challenge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. All with the same objective – to take on the unique experience of crossing an ocean in a rowing boat.
